When asked if he had any secrets to living such a long and active life, Lindsay Lafford offered some insight:
- As early as I could, which meant as soon as I got out of school and its idiotic insistence on group sports like cricket and rugger - though I really did enjoy rowing in our four-oar boats - I embraced the philosophy that whenever I felt the urge to exercise come over me, I lay down until it passed away.
- I was not particularly concerned with diet - I ate whatever came along.
- I early subscribed to the theory that our arms and legs had been provided thoughtfully to enable us to manipulate an automobile, and thereafter drove every place I could.
- My loving daughter Julia, ever on the alert to contribute to my health and welfare, constantly urges me to take exercise, eat lots of salads and vegetables, and pop fishy capsules for my heart's sake. I appreciate her concern, but since she lives in Philadelphia, I have no problem in avoiding this well-meant advice.
- I have worked hard, but at an occupation that was pleasurable and rewarding. I was fortunate to be able to avoid undue stress, and I think that is one of the most important contributions. I'm convinced that psychological stress is a great destroyer.
- Perhaps the Psalmist of long ago had the prescription when he wrote, 'Who among you loves life, and desires long life to enjoy prosperity? Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.'
